The Australian Football League's newest expansion franchise announced its name during a banquet last night, and it may sound familiar. The Gold Coast Football Club will be known as the Gold Coast SUNS. In addition to the name, the team unveiled its logo, jersey (or "Guernsey," as they call it) and even a fight song, the "Suns of the Gold Coast Sky."
Having recently spent a week down under myself, and quite a bit of time with the fine folks at the AFL, I think it's pretty cool to have the name Suns represented by another sports franchise in another part of the world.
I love the idea of a team fight song, too. What do you think, fans? I've got an autographed basketball in my office that I will give away for the best Suns fight song uploaded to PlanetOrange.net by the end of August, 2010. That gives you a little more than five weeks to write your lyrics and record your tune. Let's here it! Go Suns! Both of them!
