Apologies for taking so long to get this next part up, arrived home and got straight back into work L It’s a bit of a shock to the system after having a month off!
January 30th – day after Suns vs Spurs/ day before Suns vs Bulls
Was up bright and early on the Friday, still riding a buzz from the amazing day we had prior (sans the “loss” part). As Staff mentioned in the last blog, Dave Griffin had arranged for the Suns car service to pick me up and drive me to Mesa, which completely blew my mind.
So imagine my surprise when Griff himself rolls into the street in his SUV! I was speechless! He was basically “well Steve, I couldn’t sleep much after the loss last night, and I really didn’t feel like heading into the office at 6am so I thought I’d drive you out there myself – it’s really a lovely drive.” Words could not describe it. So I got to talk basketball with the suns VP of basketball, one on one, for like 30mins! I thought I was pretty switched on when it came to the inner-workings of the basketball world, but getting to know what it’s like from the perspective of someone responsible for ultimately running a professional NBA franchise was fascinating.
So we get out to Mesa and he says to give him a call when I’m done, and he’ll arrange a ride back for me – Griff is just pure class, and I could never thank him enough for all his help.
Anyways, while I’m out at Mesa, the other guys hit up some bars in downtown in their “downtime”; I can’t really go into too much detail because I wasn’t there obviously, but from what I heard, the bars made quite a living off of those 3 guys that day. An irish pub was involved, and their day culminated with an 8-hour, $210 drinking session at Hooters in the Arizona centre. And that’s between 3 of them!
So I got home after a full day in Mesa, at which time the guys were still out and about. The reason I had to head out to Mesa in the first place was to sit an exam (which helped me fast track my degree) and I passed, so I was in the mood to celebrate! I couldn’t get a hold of the other guys, so I decided to go it alone. Earlier on I was flicking through a newspaper and I came across a “Tempe pub crawl” so I thought, “why not?” Tempe here I come!
The first stop was a place called Maloney’s, a nice little bar with a cool outdoor area. It was so good that I didn’t end up leaving until close! My cab driver(s) were cool too, they ended up coming in and hanging out for a bit, and I also made a few more friends inside! I can’t get over just how friendly everyone was, and how receptive they were to this regular Aussie guy. I had a great time, and looking back, if (when) I move to Phoenix, I think Tempe is the area I’d like to live in.
So after close I was invited back to a party with these university kids from the bar. Had a nice time, chatted with a few people and was introduced to this game called “Beer Pong”. It must be an American college thing because I had never played before, and people were astounded by that. Still, at that time of morning, and after so many drinks, I realised that it was slightly more challenging than it looked, haha!
All in all, another great day – special thanks again to Griff for all his help, Virginia and Christine (sp?) for being my designated driver/ drinking buddy, Kramer and Christine for the invite to the party, and lastly Maloney’s, for being the best damn club in all of Tempe!
January 31st – day of Suns vs Bulls
I was surprisingly fine when I woke up on Saturday morning, with absolutely no trace of a hangover. Today was the day we’d be joined by the 5th member of our Phoenix leg journey, fellow PO member impulsenine, a Tucson local who made the trip up just to hang with us for the weekend. Impulse was a cool guy, made even cooler by the fact that he had a car. And a phone ;) So we took an instant liking to him haha – no more 20 minute walks to the nearest payphone!
We didn’t really make a move until early afternoon (save for some grocery shopping in the morning) – our first port of call was down to the local park to get our game on. Two weeks of Burger King, Pizza Hut, MacDonalds... let’s see, more Burger King... well, you get the drift, had left us a bit overweight and considerably out of shape. So we thought we’d try and remedy this by having a bit of a shootaround – in fact, having a game against some of the local guys was something we’d been looking forward to for a while. Lucky for us, after shooting around for a little while, some locals showed up and we were able to have a bit of a scrimmage. We mixed up the teams a bit, and the game came down to the wire – MVP honours definitely had to go to KPCB34, who dominated with some massive boards and clutch shooting.
A quick dash back to the house to get cleaned up and it was off to US Airways for the Suns vs Bulls game. The game itself was decent, and it was nice to see some of the young Bulls pieces, namely Rose, Thomas, and even Thabo, play live. Unfortunately, this was yet another grim defeat and the mood was pretty deflating at the final siren.
During the game though, we were fortunate enough to be taken behind the scenes and shown another interesting aspect of the basketball world – the “technological side”, from the vans that relay the live feeds out to the TV audiences. Steven and Josh were nice enough to give us this tour, and it was crazy to see just how many different camera angles they use for the single local feed. Looking back on it, I have no idea how they managed to squeeze so many people, and screens, into such a tiny van! There were literally 80+ monitors available to them, and we actually saw them review a call (halftime?) where they were communicating with the officials as to whether or not there was a foot on the line. We saw them zoom in, slow it down, examine it from every angle – the downside to this technology though is that the Bulls’ 3 pointer counted, and it cost the suns a point!
Postgame, we again got to head behind the scenes, and we got to meet up with some of the players. The only ones that didn’t come out were Nash and Hill (private meeting?) and the Diesel. Meeting guys like Tucker and Dudley though was great, they are just so personable and down-to-earth – when they are in street clothes you just can’t imagine that they are professionals earning millions of dollars – they are just regular people. It’s not really surprising though, the suns have always recruited high character guys and it’s nice to see that it’s still the case after so many years.
Thanks again to Steven and Josh for lending us their time and showing us how things work behind the scenes! It’s very much appreciated!
Next up – superbowl Sunday!
